SPROUTS Earth Mela 2010 "The International Year of Biodiversity"

SPROUTS' Earth Mela 2010 – The International Year of Biodiversity
April 22, 2010 is World Earth day - A day that was created to inspire awareness and appreciation for our environment. Forty years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever before and more species of animals, plants and marine life are depleting from our planet. Considering the urgent need to preserve our bio-diversity, 2010 has been declared as the `International year of Bio-diversity' by the United Nations.

All over the world, various NGOs and concerned citizens organise events to involve common citizens in efforts to restore our Planet Earth. We at SPROUTS too have been doing our small bit, via our annual bonanza - the Earth Mela. Last year, we focused on ideas to reduce our carbon footprint and emissions – titling it the Carbon Reversal Movement. This year, in line with international plan, SPROUTS' Earth Mela 2010 is focusing on raising awareness about conserving our indigenous biodiversity for the values and services they provide and how they result in the survival and well-being of human beings.

The SPROUTS' Earth Mela-2010 being organised at the Maharashtra Nature Park (MNPS), on April 24 & 25 from 10am to 6pm, will host a number of events, through which each one of us can also learn about our urban biodiversity and also what one can do to conserve it. The event will include nature trails, a cycle rally, lectures on biodiversity, film screenings a photo-exhibition on our fort's, mountain's, city's and some rare biodiversity, besides fun activities for kids like adventure sports, face painting, colouring and exploration activities. The 2-day event will be a humble initiative to encourage organisations and individuals to take direct or indirect biodiversity conservation activities in the vicinity of their schools, colleges, offices and places of residence.
You ALL can be a part of the change-making team! So do join us on April 24 & 25 at MNPS, to have a fun filled, educational and thoroughly empowering weekend. We work for Nature! Do YOU?

Quick Facts of Events:
- Photo Exhibition: 100-120 Photos about rare biodiversity, creatures found on forts, in the Himalaya and also right here in our Mumbai City!

Easter Lunch at Aromas of China

Aromas of China is located at Crystal Plaza (off link road ) [do not mistake it with crystal plaza at oshiwara). This place gets pretty crowded so it is good to call up +91 22 67253691-95 and book reserve a place for the next day.

The place starts getting full by 1.30 . The cost on sunday was 525/- + taxes which comes to 650/- per person unlimited buffet. (usually its about 400/- on weekdays)

I always compare all buffet places with the best buffet place Mainland China
(map)

Aromas of china is dimly lit and the seating is a bit cramped compared to Mainland China

Both the places have issues with parking .So you have to park outside the building .

The interiors of Aromas of china is really good with buddha statuses and other artistic sculptures .

There is white wine complimentary (semi dry) the reviews about it was mixed some found it sweet some found it a bit sour .Ice tea is extra (was ok made from the usual powered ice tea mix). I really found it hard to find good restaurants which still make ice tea from real tea.

Chicken was ok. The crab was too bony difficult to eat. Veg dishes were good. The lamb was a bit tough compared to the the lamb at Mainland China.
The desserts :- The chocolate mouse was not really good. The butter scotch tasted like vanilla.
The vanilla with hot chocolate was good. The liquid chocolate seemed to solidify when put on the vanilla chocolate unlike in mainland china where the hot chocolate remains liquid .

The serving area is in a small passage so there is huge lines of people waiting for thier turn to get served. In Mainland China the serving area is separate from the dining area so it is easy to server without long lines of people behind you. Also due to the long lines of people waiting in the lobby the Manager (NE guy) kept walking up and down checking on who is finished .This dint give a relaxed atmosphere (more like a udipi joint)  .

The good part is the waiter had kept a good eye on the table and got the dessert spoons without having to be told. But the density of servers at Mainland china are much more and it is easy to catch a waiters eye there compared to here.

The Music is good with huge bose speakers inbuilt into the ceiling .

Lunch at Soam Chowpatty

Soam is a nice Gujarati restaurant situated just opposite babulnath temple . You can get down at grant road and take a taxi to babulnath temple about 20 rs.

The Menu

We began with some chaas

Followed with some paanki

Paankis are pancakes made of rice flour (with urud daal) steamed in between banana leaves. We peeled it and had it with green chutney.

The main course was Gatte Ki subzi with masala satpadi (105/-)

And Shrikhand Puri and Batata Nu Shaak (105/-).The Shrikhand was heavenly!

The rotis were too small for me (2 6 inch rotis) so i ordered another paratha( 60/- ) thinking it would be a big thick punjabi size paratha  and that too was a tiny 6 inch paratha :( . I had the paratha with some spicy sweet mango pickle

The desserts looked tempting like the hand churned ice creams and malai malpua/garam mohanthaal, sugar free khajur pooranpoli .

But we want to have a milkshake at another place which had been there for a long time called Bharath (Juice and Snacks).

A good place to visit for some nice gujju food . But not a place to come to hog :).
Also could not figure out why all the dishes were priced at 105/- :) .

This place is just around the corner from soam . While walking there we bought some fresh multigrained bread at the gokul bakers and some walnut cake
.

The Sticker on the cake says its made somewhere near charkop
16/A,Hakoba comp,Chinchpokli-E mumbai 33
Bharat juice and snacks is locate just opposite bhavans college chowpatty and has been there for more than 50 years .The place was not too crowded maybe due to the exams and also maybe it gets crowded in the evenings.
We had the mango milkshake (125/- )which came with mango pieces on the top.

Another good foodie day in mumbai :)

Monday Night Poetry Slam @ Cafe Goa Bistro Bandra and Grille April 5, 2010

Start Time:
Monday, April 5, 2010 at 9:30pm
End Time:
Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 12:00am
Location:
Cafe Goa Bistro and Grille

It's the cruelest month of the year, AND it's getting really hot out there - so come join us for the coolest poetry slam in all of frackin' Mumbai!

Bombay Elektrik Projekt's informal, indecent, cantankerous poetry slam features amateurs, professionals, slamateurs, spoken word artists and the occasional musician as well.

If you raised your hand or shook your head at any of those categories, you should chalk down the date and set a reminder to be at the gig pronto!

As always, we're relying on you, our regulars, to get the word out to poets and performers. The only clause is original work!

Rohini Ramanathan, our host with the most, will be as hot as the summer (catch her on Red FM Adda daily), will be in charge of proceedings as usual.

SIGN UP HERE:
http://tinyurl.com/Slam-Night-Sign-Up

Musicians (bassists, percussionists, guitarists) who would like to jam with the poets, do get in touch with us now (beatpoets@bombayelektrik)

The usual FAQs for the newcomers

Who wouldn’t enjoy the opportunity to watch the most controversial local poets as they go nose-to-nose while a live, whooping and cheering audience gets rolling with them. Only poets brave enough to take the heat of interactive self-expression will advance to the final round to see who scores to become that evenings Top Dog Poet.

It will get noisy, heartfelt, ridiculous, rowdy, (and who knows—political) but it always gets going.

WHO: The most daring and provocative of Mumbai poets and spoken-word presentation artists.

WHAT: Sign up for the 12 presenting poet spots for the fortnightly Poetry Slam.

WHEN: Monday at 9pm poets sign up for the Poetry Slam to ensue at 21:15.

WHERE: Cafe Goa Bistro & Grill, Agnelo House, Off St John de Baptist Road, near Mount Mary steps, Bandra (W).

How to find it:
a) From Lilavati, head towards the Barista. Leave the Barista right, and head straight (it looks like a left). Keep coming down that road till you see a Dominos pizza on your right. The first left lane you see after Dominos, stop. It's a stone's throw from here.

b) From anywhere else (like Turner Road, Hill Road, Carter Road), ask the rickshaw guy to take you to Mount Mary steps (not the church, the steps). Once there, look for a Smokin Joe's pizza place on your left. Get off here, it's the first right turn walking distance.

Call: 98197-03271 / 66299167 / 26404115
Email: info@cafegoabistro.com

WHY: To take part in the most in-your-face fortnightly poetry competition in Mumbai.

HOW: Bring your best 3 poems and sign up for the three rounds of readings.

NEEDED: An audience.

A visit to the farmers market

The farmers market was a mix of semi commercial stalls on one the right and the farmers selling their vegetables on the right .There also was some good food stalls and a place to sit on the swing (if you were an early bird to the market) .

The first stall was selling cloth bags and organic books.

There was a stall call auro paint selling organic paint.

A stall called ecocert (organic certification) which said they certify the organic farmers and conduct courses for the farmers?

When i walked in there was a guy who walked in with a couple of cane and wood chairs and laid them on the grass in the park ready to be sold. The atmosphere was a nice relaxed one (this was in the morning - i wonder how it would be in the evening with the linking road crowd)

Chai

Tulsi, masala chai was being served in small clay pots for 25 Rupees.

The movie ,chat and book section

Sonaalii sabherwal had a stall selling microbiotic products.

Angelfood
The place which had the nicest vibes and enthu was the angelfood section
located in the Organic Café at The Farmers' Market, Mumbai.
It had all vegan, all natural...
Breakfast Parfait w/ Chocolate Cinnamon Muesli
Mario's Potato Pizza
Egg-less (vegan) Quiche

Khans fruit carving
Had some lovely veggies carved into flowers .

And Finally the veggies!!

I came to a conclusion there are many different types of shoppers at the farmers market

Those who had come to buy the organic veggies.
Those who had come to relax on a sunday morning with some organic juice food.
Those who had some for the food, movie, literature.
And those who came for a little bit of everything
And those who were just curious to check out what the farmers market was all about.

There was a computer guy who ran sunsaar which deals in energy conservation and waste management and gave every one a flyer on (Daily Dump compost at home) .he was selling terrecotta composters
www.dailydump.org
mumbai - 022-65052168 dailydump.mumbai@gmail.com

I also found out urban leaves has some organic farming stuff happening every sunday at the Maharashtra nature park (they have a small place with warli painting when you enter the nature park .)

Start Your Own City Farm - Grow your own vegetables on your terrace

Also tata power does not need the whole buildings approval to get your connection changed according to anil of sunsaar.
