Lunch at Iyer's Kitchen Yari Road

Update Feb 2011
This place has not closed

iyers kitchen

Iyer's is located at the place which used be called Rolling beans earlier
(The rolling beans the plaque is still there outside) .

The place still has the signature light aluminium chair which was there at rolling beans.

The changes are the wall photos of old south Indian stars and some super low sofa's.There are aluminium chairs on one side of each table and the low sofas on the other side. The tables in the middle have aluminium chairs on both sides.

The sofas become uncomfortable when it comes to eating due to the level with the table .

When sitting at the table on the sides you can look outside and see the world passing. There is also a small ganpati temple near a coconut tree there.

The coaster on the table are laminated pages of the thanjavur temple ,Bharatnatyam and other titbits about the history and culture of south india.

We decided to go for their SAAPAAD (Ulimited thali) you get unlimited sada dosa and rice (thought appam is listed on their menu for saapaad it is not availabe this was a bit dissapointment)

The menu

The sada dosa was ok (a bit dry) laden with ghee. There was steamed rice, pickle, coconut chutney, sambar, moor(like chaas),payasam, beans with coconut,
The moor was nice but the kadipatta in the moor was really irritating .The two dishes on the left where a bit spicy there rest were bland. Nothing to blow your mind to go yummmmm.

The services with unlike the thali and udupi places where the waiters are literally pouring food into the Katoris once they see it is empty. Here you have to catch the eye of the waiter or the captain. The captain/manager seems to have been brought right out of chennai (the non-pleasant way of talking without the humble finesse of the real udupi places ). For example we do not have appam (that is the end of it! even though it is on the menu with not suggestions of alternate options to please the customer )
Which was difficult even when there were just two tables full. In a way we did not over eat due to the time it took them to get small katoris of the items (they did not have the usually serving 4 sided vessel with the huge spoons to pour the food directly into your empty katori)

The thali can be compared to the Banana leaf thali which had a lot more items and was cheaper and much more yummy than the tahli at Iyers Kitchen.

They also own the soda place(which used to be the barbarian gym before) which serves continental food above this place.

The Farmers Market Nilgiri Garden, Linking Road, Bandra (W) April 11, 2010

The Farmers' Market Season Two October 3, 2010 to April 24, 2011 - Bandra

Tree ripened mangoes another week away; strawberries, grapes, figs, guavas, chicoos, watermelons, oranges, sweet lime &, hold your breath, freshly made organic sugarcane juice. Personally I have never tasted better. Even the simple guava mixed with a dash of rock salt & organic red chili powder was the best I have tasted!

Organic fruits are being juiced at the market. Come taste the difference.

Farmers are tired after driving the night. Please be patient & help them when you can.

All vegetables will be there as usual. Farmers are now not coming via vashi & so produce is even more fresh. Don't go just by looks. They taste fabulous. Come out and support the farmers' market if u want to keep getting these safe delicious foods.

The cafe foods are delicious too because the ingredients & chefs are organic !!

Taste the potatoes, onions, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, the non-bt-brinjal & other veggies.

Candy floss!

Come jam with the young musicians!

The cafe is very cool under all those lovely old trees, the coolest place to be under the hot summer sun

This is YOUR market, your suggestions & participation are crucial

Art Exhibition by Revati Sharma Singh @ Gallery Art & Soul from April 17th to May 2nd 2010

Between the Lines
by

Revati Sharma Singh
at
Art & Soul Gallery
April 17 - May 2, 2010

Gallery Art & Soul takes the pleasure of presenting Revati Sharma Singh’s first solo exhibition in the city.

Revati’s most recent body of works addresses the complexities of inhabiting a world where ‘lines’ characterize trends of upheaval and unison. If her previous works evoked a feeling of cultural disintegration, the ones in ‘Between the Lines’ portray human essence and evolution.

Speaking about her approaching solo exhibition, Revati says, “Everywhere we look, in this city or the country for that matter, there are lines - some invisible and some that stare you right in the eye… we choose to ignore them because it makes us uncomfortable. These are not just physical lines but social, religious, political and economical as well… it’s the extremes that frighten me. It bothers me that I am very much a part of it all and angers me that I do nothing to change it.”

Revati Sharma Singh can easily be described as one of India’s thinking artists. Her works provoke deep thought and make for a visual journey that inspires the mind’s eye. It’s in her atelier that she finds herself at peace and one with the issues that deeply concern her – they maybe the disintegration of our value systems or even the lines that divide us.

Her art lends itself to wholesome sentiments – sentiments that lighten or beset our daily life. This unique exhibition offers the viewer a sublime experience through works on canvas.

Between the Lines

Lines form a basis of who we are.

When we think of lines, we probably think of lines that divide.

They may be borders which divide one country from another. They may be religion, dividing one home from another. They may be monetary distinction bringing the barrier between rich and poor.

There are a few lines, though not visible to the naked eye, are always present. It may include the lines in our relationships, the lines of caste and creed of colour and also the lines between truth and deceit.

Despite these divisions, there are lines that unite.

That may be an umbilical cord uniting a mother with her child. The heritage passes down to the next generation, uniting two generations. Though there are borders, there are also lines which connect one country to another. The lines on our palms define and create our destiny. Our bones fuse together to make the most complex forms – our bodies.

The most important lines may be that of communication, forming the basis of all different languages and dialects where love, peace and war mean the same thing in different languages to all the people.

About the Artist
“Art is subjective. There can be nothing objective about it, either for the artist or the person looking at the artwork. The process mirrors life.” ~ Revati Sharma Singh

Graduated from The Delhi College of Art in 1996, Revati Sharma Singh is considered to be a thinking artist – an artist whose conscience is of primary importance in her works. A painter and installation artist, Revati’s simultaneously complex and detailed creations reflect sensitivity to urban alienation and cultural displacement.

Having spent a large part of her artistic career abroad, she has returned to her country of birth to continue her artistic journey. “I’ve lived out of the country for 10 years. While away, I used to paint the warmth, colours, sounds, smells and vibrancy of India – it is a country ‘totally alive’ in every sense,” Revati articulates. The first Indian female artist to have her solo exhibition, ‘My Own India’ at the Kings Road Gallery in London, her paintings represented her fond and vivid memories of India and its people.

On returning, there has been an urgent sense to contribute and participate in Indian society by raising questions through her art. Her concerns about the disintegration of the fabric of society lends as the underlying theme of her works. Revati goes on to say, “On my return, I had to take off my rose-tinted glasses. Under all that warmth, passion and festivity I found a murky prejudiced society made up of inequitable layers. It was like the floodgates of pent-up emotions had opened up – everything that used to bother me or upset me about this incredible, beautiful, frustrating country came pouring out. I found MY way to protest against injustice, against the lack of political will, the sad state of our morals and values, the corruption, the apathy, the poverty and helplessness you see in so many faces.”

In 2009, she received an overwhelming response at the Kala Ghoda Festival with her installation work titled ‘How Long Can You Stand It?’ displayed at the main square. Continuing her enriching association with the Kala Ghoda Festival, this year too Revati was selected to be one of the few privileged artists to showcase her live installation at the main square. Her thought-provoking installation ‘Mera Desh Mahaan?’ represented her dialogue with society about its values and disposition as a role model for today’s younger generation.

“Installation art is liberating,” says Revati. “Not only can one use any medium, one has the freedom to explore and multiply each medium making sense of the whole along the way. So much can be said so effectively by using simple, everyday objects, which the viewer identifies with.”

When speaking about her medium of work, Revati says, “Oil on canvas is my preferred medium to work in when I paint.” As an artist, she gives plenty of thought to the titles of her works, “I like to know the thought behind a work of art. I want to create an unspoken dialogue that will breathe life into the painting. It is for that reason that I like to title my work.”

“I started painting because my maternal grandmother didn’t give me paper to draw on – she gave me the walls of her 100-year-old house to paint on. My mother didn’t give me art lessons - she gave me her absolute whole hearted belief that everything I ever painted was ‘brilliant’. My father never taught me how life should be lived… he lived it… and without the complete love and absolute support from my husband, Darpan and Saniya and Andy... nothing would have been possible.”

With all the recent success and adulation that Revati‘s works have received, she will now be showcasing her works at her solo exhibition, ‘Between the Lines’ at Art & Soul Gallery from April 17th – May 2nd, 2010.

SPROUTS Earth Mela 2010 "The International Year of Biodiversity"

SPROUTS' Earth Mela 2010 – The International Year of Biodiversity
April 22, 2010 is World Earth day - A day that was created to inspire awareness and appreciation for our environment. Forty years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever before and more species of animals, plants and marine life are depleting from our planet. Considering the urgent need to preserve our bio-diversity, 2010 has been declared as the `International year of Bio-diversity' by the United Nations.

All over the world, various NGOs and concerned citizens organise events to involve common citizens in efforts to restore our Planet Earth. We at SPROUTS too have been doing our small bit, via our annual bonanza - the Earth Mela. Last year, we focused on ideas to reduce our carbon footprint and emissions – titling it the Carbon Reversal Movement. This year, in line with international plan, SPROUTS' Earth Mela 2010 is focusing on raising awareness about conserving our indigenous biodiversity for the values and services they provide and how they result in the survival and well-being of human beings.

The SPROUTS' Earth Mela-2010 being organised at the Maharashtra Nature Park (MNPS), on April 24 & 25 from 10am to 6pm, will host a number of events, through which each one of us can also learn about our urban biodiversity and also what one can do to conserve it. The event will include nature trails, a cycle rally, lectures on biodiversity, film screenings a photo-exhibition on our fort's, mountain's, city's and some rare biodiversity, besides fun activities for kids like adventure sports, face painting, colouring and exploration activities. The 2-day event will be a humble initiative to encourage organisations and individuals to take direct or indirect biodiversity conservation activities in the vicinity of their schools, colleges, offices and places of residence.
You ALL can be a part of the change-making team! So do join us on April 24 & 25 at MNPS, to have a fun filled, educational and thoroughly empowering weekend. We work for Nature! Do YOU?

Quick Facts of Events:
- Photo Exhibition: 100-120 Photos about rare biodiversity, creatures found on forts, in the Himalaya and also right here in our Mumbai City!

Easter Lunch at Aromas of China

Aromas of China is located at Crystal Plaza (off link road ) [do not mistake it with crystal plaza at oshiwara). This place gets pretty crowded so it is good to call up +91 22 67253691-95 and book reserve a place for the next day.

The place starts getting full by 1.30 . The cost on sunday was 525/- + taxes which comes to 650/- per person unlimited buffet. (usually its about 400/- on weekdays)

I always compare all buffet places with the best buffet place Mainland China
(map)

Aromas of china is dimly lit and the seating is a bit cramped compared to Mainland China

Both the places have issues with parking .So you have to park outside the building .

The interiors of Aromas of china is really good with buddha statuses and other artistic sculptures .

There is white wine complimentary (semi dry) the reviews about it was mixed some found it sweet some found it a bit sour .Ice tea is extra (was ok made from the usual powered ice tea mix). I really found it hard to find good restaurants which still make ice tea from real tea.

Chicken was ok. The crab was too bony difficult to eat. Veg dishes were good. The lamb was a bit tough compared to the the lamb at Mainland China.
The desserts :- The chocolate mouse was not really good. The butter scotch tasted like vanilla.
The vanilla with hot chocolate was good. The liquid chocolate seemed to solidify when put on the vanilla chocolate unlike in mainland china where the hot chocolate remains liquid .

The serving area is in a small passage so there is huge lines of people waiting for thier turn to get served. In Mainland China the serving area is separate from the dining area so it is easy to server without long lines of people behind you. Also due to the long lines of people waiting in the lobby the Manager (NE guy) kept walking up and down checking on who is finished .This dint give a relaxed atmosphere (more like a udipi joint)  .

The good part is the waiter had kept a good eye on the table and got the dessert spoons without having to be told. But the density of servers at Mainland china are much more and it is easy to catch a waiters eye there compared to here.

The Music is good with huge bose speakers inbuilt into the ceiling .

Lunch at Soam Chowpatty

Soam is a nice Gujarati restaurant situated just opposite babulnath temple . You can get down at grant road and take a taxi to babulnath temple about 20 rs.

The Menu

We began with some chaas

Followed with some paanki

Paankis are pancakes made of rice flour (with urud daal) steamed in between banana leaves. We peeled it and had it with green chutney.

The main course was Gatte Ki subzi with masala satpadi (105/-)

And Shrikhand Puri and Batata Nu Shaak (105/-).The Shrikhand was heavenly!

The rotis were too small for me (2 6 inch rotis) so i ordered another paratha( 60/- ) thinking it would be a big thick punjabi size paratha  and that too was a tiny 6 inch paratha :( . I had the paratha with some spicy sweet mango pickle

The desserts looked tempting like the hand churned ice creams and malai malpua/garam mohanthaal, sugar free khajur pooranpoli .

But we want to have a milkshake at another place which had been there for a long time called Bharath (Juice and Snacks).

A good place to visit for some nice gujju food . But not a place to come to hog :).
Also could not figure out why all the dishes were priced at 105/- :) .

This place is just around the corner from soam . While walking there we bought some fresh multigrained bread at the gokul bakers and some walnut cake
.

The Sticker on the cake says its made somewhere near charkop
16/A,Hakoba comp,Chinchpokli-E mumbai 33
Bharat juice and snacks is locate just opposite bhavans college chowpatty and has been there for more than 50 years .The place was not too crowded maybe due to the exams and also maybe it gets crowded in the evenings.
We had the mango milkshake (125/- )which came with mango pieces on the top.

Another good foodie day in mumbai :)
