On tuesday afternoon we got a call from our volunteer Akshay Sakharkar about a gentle giant BIJLEE... who collapsed in the early hours of tuesday. Bijlee, a 58 year old female elephant belongs to a couple who use it to beg for alms, marriages and other auspicious occasions. Bijlee was lying on the roadside near Wockhardt Hospital in Mulund. We got in touch with Dr. Himanshu, who is a specialist in treatment of large animals. After inquiring around and being checked by the vet, we got to know that Bijlee had fallen in a creek and injured her hind legs and has been having issues from then. Volunteers from RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare ) were also present and were of immense help ! Bijlee had to be made to stand so that medicines could be administered. The task of getting this huge girl to stand was tough, for which we had to take the help of a crane. Once on her feet with the support of the crane, she was administered saline /glucose and treatment began. We checked on her today morning and she's doing much better than yesterday ! We will keep updating you of her progress ! We thank each and every kind hearted soul who helped us in this massive rescue !
Update : Thanks to the support of everyone around, Bijlee has been receiving a lot of support. A shed to house her and her partner Laxmi is being erected. A lot of help is being provided by the locals of Mulund too. We are sure that with all the best wishes and support coming Bijlee's way, she will recover soon, very soon !
On 18/6/2013 BIJLI was shifted in a shade that was erected at the place where she was initially been treated , Elephant expert Dr.K.K. Sharma - famous in the country as well as the world for treatment of elephants had arrived and stated observing and treating Bijli. We are thankful to AMTM for arranging one of the best doctors for our poor friend in distress.
On 15/6/2013 the doctors had come to the location for the treatment of BIJLI , she was been given medicines and dressed (on wounds) by the team of doctors appointed by the forest department. With a hope that she soon recovers and is able to balance herself on her own and is soon declared OK to be transferred to the animal hospital efforts are been taken by the needful institutions. Looking forward that soon things get sorted and she is at the expected and necessary place for her better future. We will be following up with the happenings and keep things and updates posted.
On 14/6/2013 , it was decided to transfer Bijli to animal hospital at Parel , with the help of two cranes she was lifted and kept in the truck , but the team of doctors stated that she was usafe for transport as she was unable to balance on her own. So the plan was dropped and she was again brought down , it was then decided that her further treatment had to be done at the spot where she was and as soon as she could be ready to balance on her four legs the further process and decision of her trnsfer would be decided. A team of doctors from national park and animal hospitals had visited the site , now she was at the same place and her treatment will be done from next day. Our team is following up.
After the hard rescue of 11/6/2013 , on 12/6/2013 our team visited BIJLI for a follow up treatment prescribed by the doctor. We applied medicines to the injury and fed with the other medicines prescribed. she was standing and also accepting food and water , we all were happy about this. In the late night visit our member found that BIJLI had settled down and we all were worried that will she be able to get up on her own the next day. And the fear was right BiIJLI was not able to get up on her own and another operation started today. it will be updated soon.
